Block and liner pool- Weaknesses

• No heat retention

• Concrete foundations needed

• Blocks supplied by third party

• Skilled labour required to lay blocks

• Labour intensive & time consuming

• Walls require rendering

• Fiberglass bays require fixing to the walls and leveling

• Fittings have to be built into block work and leveled

• Liner lock has to be screwed down
to block

• Corners has to be formed (inserts
or render)

Polymer panel systems -
Weaknesses

• No heat retention

• No insulation

• Low u-values

• Higher all round running costs

• All panels bolted together

• Large X frames every 4ft

• Lager over dig up to 600mm

• More spoil removal

• More raw materials

• More labour required

• Pools filled with water and backfilled at same time for equalisation

Polypool Strengths

• Easier to interface with ground work/main contractor hence lower labour output

• Less raw materials required

• Less capital outlay as swimming pool shell much cheaper than concrete/tiled option

• Fully insulated with running costs as much as 56% less than concrete equivalent

• Life time warrantee on the swimming pool shell

• 15 year warrantee on the Alkorplan heavy duty liner membrane – over the pools 30 year life cycle one replacement liner is far less expensive and time consuming than the required maintenance on the tiled option.

• Much easier and cheaper to maintain than tiles – Water line can be wiped clean with a cloth, whereas tiles become imbedded with grime etc over a period of time

Concrete Tiled Strengths

• Allows a tiled finish

• Allows an element of freeform/
shaping for the swimming pool

• This is usually where there is a requirement for a design element which can only be achieved by way of a monolithic shell (something like an overflow spa or vanishing edge)

Concrete Tiled Weaknesses

• Hugely labour intensive

• Very long construction process

• Very expensive

• No insulation hence high running costs

• High maintenance

• Monolithic shells are prone to lifting, shifting and cracking

• Structural movement can lead to higher repair and maintenance costs

• A tiled swimming pool will need re-grouting
every 7-8 years with a 2/3 week down time on every occasion
